FTIR Accessories

FTIR accessories decide how a sample reaches the infrared beam. A solid sample may need a mortar, KBr powder and a pellet die; a liquid needs the right cell or cuvette; a gas needs a sealed gas cell; a polymer film or a silicon wafer needs a dedicated holder. Hench supplies the accessories that support these workflows, together with the moisture-proof storage and laboratory ovens that keep them working reliably. Tell us your sample type and spectrometer model, and we will confirm the matching accessories.

ATR and Reflectance Accessories

Attenuated total reflectance is the fastest route for solids, pastes and liquids. The multi ATR reflective attachment is designed for reflectance measurements, and the HW-4 polystyrene film provides a reference film for verifying instrument performance. Browse the full range in the ATR reflective attachment and polystyrene film category.

Liquid Sampling Accessories

Liquid handling covers sealed cells, cuvettes and the racks that hold them. Available items include the HF-8 fixed liquid tank, the HF-7 removable liquid tank, the HF-5A quartz cuvette, the HF-5 cuvette shelf, the HF-6 locking sample rack and the KBr window. See the liquid sample accessories category for the complete list.

Gas Sampling Accessories

Gas-phase analysis requires a sealed optical path. The HF-11 IR gas cell is supplied for gas sampling; the gas sample accessories category lists the available options.

Film, Slide and Sample Holders

Thin films, coated slides and plates need a holder that keeps the sample flat and repeatable in the beam. Options include the HW-15/16 IR slide sample holder, the HW-1 universal sample rack and the HW-2 magnetic IR spectrophotometer holder. See the film sample holder and universal sample holder categories.

KBr Powder, Windows and Mortars

For transmission measurements, the sample is normally ground and pressed into a KBr pellet. Hench supplies KBr-F spectral pure potassium bromide powder, KBr-S crystalline potassium bromide, KBr windows and the HW-3 agate mortar. The full range is in the KBr and mortar category, and the pressing procedure is described in our KBr pellet preparation guide.

Moisture-Proof Storage and Desiccants

Humidity is the most common cause of drifting baselines and unstable spectra. Storage options include the FTIR dry cabinet moisture-proof box, the Thermo IS5 moisture-proof box, the Thermo IS50 anti-moisture cabinet and HW-5 IR desiccant. See the moisture-proof box and desiccant category, or read why a dedicated moisture-proof box matters.

Ovens and Oven Lights

Drying samples and accessories before measurement removes residual water from the optical path. Hench supplies the HK-3 IR laboratory oven, the ZHD-10 IR oven light and the ZHD-20 digital IR baking light. See the IR oven and oven light category.

How to Choose FTIR Accessories

  • Solids and powders: mortar, KBr powder, pellet die and a laboratory press for transmission measurements, or an ATR attachment for direct measurement.
  • Liquids: sealed liquid cells or quartz cuvettes, with a rack to hold them in position.
  • Gases: a gas cell with the required path length and window material.
  • Films, slides and wafers: a film or slide sample holder that keeps the sample flat.
  • Humidity-sensitive laboratories: a moisture-proof cabinet and desiccant to protect optics between measurements.
  • Sample drying: a laboratory oven and oven light for controlled drying before analysis.

If you are not sure which combination fits your spectrometer, send us the sample type, the measurement mode (transmission or ATR) and the instrument model.

Method Notes for Sample Preparation

Accessory selection follows the measurement method. For transmission work the KBr pellet route is documented in our KBr pellet SOP: a 13 mm die, 8-10 tons of load, and a hold of 60-90 seconds after a 1-2 minute vacuum step. For ATR work the crystal and the sample contact decide the spectrum quality, so the attachment is matched to the spectrometer and to the sample type.

Powder, dies and windows are best kept dry between runs. A moisture-proof cabinet with fresh desiccant prevents the water bands that appear when KBr or the die absorbs moisture. The complete grinding and pressing sequence is described in our KBr pellet preparation guide.

What FTIR accessories does Hench supply?

ATR and reflectance attachments, liquid cells and cuvettes, gas cells, film and slide holders, sample racks, KBr powder, KBr windows, agate mortars, moisture-proof storage cabinets, desiccants and laboratory ovens.

Which accessories are needed for KBr pellet preparation?

An agate mortar for grinding, KBr powder as the matrix, a pellet die of the required diameter and a laboratory press to form the pellet. The full procedure is described in our KBr pellet preparation guide.

Can accessories be ordered together with a spectrometer?

Yes. Accessories can be quoted together with an FTIR spectrometer or ordered separately for existing instruments.
