Attenuated total reflectance is the fastest route for solids, pastes and liquids. Liquid Sampling Accessories

Film, Slide and Sample Holders
Thin films, coated slides and plates need a holder that keeps the sample flat and repeatable in the beam. KBr Powder, Windows and Mortars
For transmission measurements, the sample is normally ground and pressed into a KBr pellet. How to Choose FTIR Accessories
- Solids and powders: mortar, KBr powder, pellet die and a laboratory press for transmission measurements, or an ATR attachment for direct measurement.
- Liquids: sealed liquid cells or quartz cuvettes, with a rack to hold them in position.
- Gases: a gas cell with the required path length and window material.

Method Notes for Sample Preparation
Accessory selection follows the measurement method. For transmission work the KBr pellet route is documented in our KBr pellet SOP: a 13 mm die, 8-10 tons of load, and a hold of 60-90 seconds after a 1-2 minute vacuum step. For ATR work the crystal and the sample contact decide the spectrum quality, so the attachment is matched to the spectrometer and to the sample type.
Powder, dies and windows are best kept dry between runs. A moisture-proof cabinet with fresh desiccant prevents the water bands that appear when KBr or the die absorbs moisture. The complete grinding and pressing sequence is described in our KBr pellet preparation guide.
